Message from the Principal Dear Regency Families There is a lot of talent at Regency, that’s for sure! On Tuesday, February 23, 2016, the Cast and Crew of Aladdin Jr. performed 2 outstanding shows at the Newmarket Theatre. Unfortunately, we needed to cancel the Feb. 24th show due to the YRDSB’s Inclement Weather Policy. However, the good news is that we secured another date – for Tues., May 3rd. The classes that were scheduled to attend on Feb. 24 will attend the 10:00am show on this day. If you have already purchased seats, they will be considered complimentary tickets. However, you will need to contact the theatre at least one day before the date of the performance, (Tuesday, May 3, 2016) and choose your seats again. Please notify the theatre that you will not be using your seats so that they may be released for sale. Once this is done, your refund cheque will be processed by the school. We ask that cancelled seats be done as soon as possible. We appreciate your cooperation. I want to extend a very special thank you to all the cast members, the Newmarket Theater staff, Sheryl Thomas, Mrs. Knowles, and Mrs. Hillaby for making Aladdin Jr. possible. Here’s something else to celebrate: Our Intermediate Girls’ Basketball Team won the area tournament and are moving on to represent our school at the Regional tournament on March 8th (held at Bill Crothers S.S.). We wish the team lots of success. Thank you to the coaches: Mrs. Walsh, Ms. Choy, Ms. Ng, Mr. Hoben and Mr. Lanning for supporting the players. March Break is around the corner. Whatever your plans, we wish you all a fantastic break. Hope you get to spend some quality family time with each other. March break begins on Monday, March 14th and ends Friday, March 18th. Please note that the school will be closed during this time. School resumes Monday, March 21st. Happy break everyone! Lisa Leoni Principal

MARCH NEWSLETTER 2016 ECO TIPS and HEALTHY SCHOOLS IGNITE TECHNOLOGY GRANT For students with SEA Technology The Ignite Technology Grant is designed to create leadership opportunities, hone communication skills, and increase selfesteem for students with SEA equipment within their school community. The goal is to bring awareness to the effective and successful use of technology for modern learning. Ignite your school and community now! Go to www.yrdsb.ca/ ignite now to learn how! March is Turn Off Your
Computer/Monitor Month. When you are not working at your computer, please make sure you have turned it off to save power. At home, you can even go a step further and unplug your devices that are not in use to reduce your Phantom Load. Reducing Your Phantom Load When you turn off your television, it’s not using any power, right? Wrong. In fact, some TVs — and many other plugged-in electric devices — use power even when they’re turned off. About five to 10 per cent of a home’s electricity consumption is used for this
“phantom load” according to Natural Resources Canada. To reduce this waste, plug multiple devices into a power bar, and use the bar’s master switch to cut and restore power. This works particularly well for chargers for cell phones and electronic devices, which are common phantom load draws. For entertainment systems, use a “smart strip” that shuts off power to some devices while leaving others, such as a personal video recorder, powered on. And when you’re looking to buy appliances and electronics, look for EnergyStar products, which use less electricity in standby mode.
Daylight Savings REMINDER: March 13th, 2016 at 2:00 A.M., please remember to change your clock to one (1) hour ahead.

Scent Free School Dropping off an item? Volunteering? Attending a meeting? Picking up your child? Please be aware that due to sensitivities and allergic reactions of students and staff, all visitors to the school are asked to please refrain
from wearing scented products in the school. Scents remain in the air for long periods, and can affect the physical well being of others. We appreciate your support in making our school a safe

Dressing for Cold Weather
Students need to come to school dressed to play outside during recesses (hats, scarves, gloves/ mittens, boots, etc.) It is advisable for children to bring extra pants and socks, in case they get wet. Please ensure that your children have indoor shoes at school that they can
change into when they come inside. Being physically active during winter is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. The school administration keeps a close eye on weather conditions including wind chill. When conditions necessitate, students will remain inside for recess. When conditions allow, reduced outdoor recesses may take place. If a student is well enough to attend school, then he/she will be expected to go outside for recess.

Upcoming Special Events in April: Dance-A-Thon FUNdraiser On April 1st, Professor Jamz and the Spin Machine will be taking over the gym with music and lights. Each grade, including kindergarten, will participate. The goal is to keep moving for the entire time (minimum of 30 minutes) and be active. A kick off assembly will be held on March 21 and hosted by Professor Jamz himself. Details will be sent home then. All funds raised will be used to purchase an ELECTRONIC SCOREBOARD for the large gym! This is a highly requested item from students, teachers, and parents and we are excited to have the opportunity to raise funds for a new scoreboard and support our Phys-ed programs, school sports teams, and fitness initiatives at Regency!
BAG 2 SCHOOL Clothing Drive (Stay tuned for more details) Let us help you with spring cleaning! Our third annual clothing drive collection is coming in April. Please donate gently used children’s/women’s/men’s clothing, shoes, hats, belts, purses, ties, boots, snowsuits, coats, drapery, sheet sets, and stuffed animals. Formal wear too (dresses, suits, ties)… but please put formal wear in a separate bag. The amount of money that we receive is based on the weight of the collection. Last year, your donations weighed as much as 2 full grown polar bears (that’s over 1 tonne!) In April, students will be coming home with a special blue donation bag, however, any type of bag is accepted. Additional blue bags will be available in the office. Clothing does not break down in landfills. Help reduce the amount of garbage that is created and donate to this worthwhile cause. *************************************************************************************
Family Movie Night Our last family movie night was so popular that we are having another one on Friday, April 22 (EARTH DAY)! Come and enjoy this free evening and connect with other families while the kids enjoy a movie. We will show 2 movies (one in each gym) and popcorn, juice & water will be sold. More details soon. ************************************************************************************* The next School Council meeting is Wednesday, March 23, 7:00pm.
